9:51- After finding a decent seat on the train, we sipped our Starbucks contentedly and found ourselves wishing that our tickets said "Mind the Gap" rather than "Watch"...once again the Brits have got it right. Going into the city is one of the few times I treat myself to a Starbucks, so needless to say I was in heaven.

10:45...ish- After a battle against the formidable New York winter wind, we arrived at the Met. We ditched our coats and were soon on our way to hunt down the object of the entire trip: an exhibit called American Stories, for our APUSH class. I wasn't all that intrigued by the whole thing until entering the sublimely lit gallery featuring some Mary Cassatts I've been longing to see. I'm such a sucker for the Impressionists. Note my awesomely nerdy audio guide gear. Quality.

11:54 to 11:59- After the American Stories exhibit and stumbling upon an amazing Robert Frank exhibit that I had seen and fallen in love with in DC (I conceded and bought the exhibition book), we came across a hall of beautiful unfinished sculptures. I rather prefer these to any finished product...there's some inexplicable mystery and rawness to them that I just love. THEN. While trying to find an exit we found my long-time favourite gallery in the whole museum. Monet. Utterly divine. Honestly I could stay in there all day.

12:15- Upon making our way to the lobby, we spotted the most priceless example of the Mr. Mom phenomenon. It was a photo op like no other...I mean, who could resist those adorable blonde boys?

12:27- While perusing the museum store I came upon the area healthily stocked with the most beautiful fashion books. I could not be torn away.

1:16- After finally escaping the hoard of people that were swamping the Met lobby, we began our walk across Central Park...in the sub-arctic temperatures it was an interesting experience.

1:38- A lunch of Indian food that I was badly craving. The chicken tikka masala and fresh nan were notably delicious. Actually, who am I kidding. It all was.

2:42- We arrive at the New York Historical Society (aka History Nerd Adventure part 2). Lincoln greets us.

3:37- After roaming around for a while doing some quality thesis research, we came to the museum shop in search of a gag gift for our history teacher. Out of all the tempting choices (Robert E Lee stuffed doll, Barack Obama paper doll, Ulysses Grant pez dispenser, Frederick Douglass finger puppet) we found the most epic souvenir ever. "You can call us Aaron Burr from the way we're droppin' Hamiltons". WIN. Sadly, it was $14...too much for two broke students.
And then we were off to Grand Central for the train home.
I definitely need to get into the city more. Sometimes I just marvel at the way New Yorkers function: one day in the city and I'm dead asleep on the train ride home from exhaustion. How do they keep it up? There must be some superhuman caffeine consumption going on there.
Have you guys ever been to the big N-Y-C? Where did you go? What did you eat? Who did you see? Are you as helpless at navigating as I am? Doubtful.

ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, darling!
ReplyDeleteI wish I got extra credits from visiting museums, sounds like real fun!
And that book section! with just the sight of it and I was in heaven :D I wonder why can't I stumble upon books like those
This sounds like the perfect day. I love history and museums!
ReplyDeleteAnd I own the set of two pink fashion books. They are amazing! I have read them over and over.
As you know, I live here (in NYC, I mean). In my opinion, we function on passion, adrenaline, great food, the excitement of knowing that there's always something cool to do or to go, a little sleep, a sense of urgency that seeps into our veins slowly but surely the longer we live here. As for navigation - it takes some time but then you figure it out. An i-phone with google maps helps too. So where did we go today? Today, we went to Central Park up at 110th street. There's a really delightful garden up there. A real treat as I'd never been there before. Then we went to lunch, back downtown to roam around, walking around in the cold marveling at how quiet the city was during the week between Christmas and New Year's. A drive by Tompkins Square Park to see if this old sax player was hanging around in his usual spot. He wasn't. Too cold. Then some errands. A stop into Barnes & Noble so that I could check out the travel and photography books then dinner at Locanda Verde in Tribeca. Once refreshed with food, off to see Penelope Cruz in Broken Embraces at the Sunshine on 2nd and Houston. And now home checking posts. Exhausting?
ReplyDeleteBy the way, your post is making me want to get to the Met next weekend!
ahhhhhhhh i'm so jealous you live just a train ride away from NYC!
ReplyDeletethe most memorable place i ate at in NYC is artichoke pizza on the lower east side. long line out of a hole in the wall joint, but the pizza is SO WORTH IT!
I love this post, it makes going to the museum look like a day at the amusement park! And the food looks delicious as well! I think I might be an even worse navigator than you I can get lost anywhere! :)
ReplyDeleteOMG! what is your text book for ap us history???? mine is a people a nation and i am such a history geek hahaha
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like just about the best day ever! I wish my highschool had an advanced history class!
ReplyDeleteAwww, mind the gap sounds worlds better than watch the gap ): Stupid USA can certainly learn a thing or two! But ah, your museum adventures sound quite fun indeed! I wish our history class did awesome things like that, but then again I guess we'd have to live near NYC for that to happen haha... You lucky son of a gun! ;) Everything looks exquisite, especially the food hehe. And gorgeous pictures as always. Well, have a fabulous week!
ReplyDeleteFabulous post !
ReplyDeleteAnd happy new year !
Man, I'm so bummed I live thousands of miles away from NYC :(
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I have been there this summer. My friend and me did all kinds of touristy stuff like hanging out at Times Square and the like. But we also went to the Met, ate delicious food in Chinatown and went and saw The Little Mermaid performed on Broadway! I also forced her to run around Central Park until we found the Alice in Wonderland statue, hahaha.
i have never been to NYC i reaaally wanna go.
ReplyDeleteoh how great the MET is, I love going there so much.
ReplyDeletelovelove,

What a romantic setting! I especially adore the picture with Abraham Lincoln's profile! Hahaha! Those fashion books look like a dream, too! Follow me, please? :) <33
ReplyDeleteThese are such lovely photos! I went to new york in the summer and I got to see Billy elliot the Musical which was probably the highlight of the trip. I also really liked central park, 5th ave, Dylans Candy Bar, the MoMa...
ReplyDeletexoxo
I really must plan a more extensive trip to the MET, I feel like I breezed through it last time I was there. my 2 trips to NYC have been rather different in tone. the first was the typical tourist venture with my parents- MET, MOMA, chinese food, shopping in soho, central park etc. the second was with my current roommate a native East Villager, so that was mostly in Greenwich, Chinatown, and Soho- lots of gallery hopping, midnight food runs, and shopping haha
ReplyDeleteWow, lovely pictures! I love Starbucks, too, that pic with the cup is my favorite ;-) And the MET-ones are cool, I love that sculpture.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to go to NY, it's in top of my 'Places to go-list' and I really want to go there after my exams..
that sounds like such a great day! love the photos!! xx
ReplyDeleteI go to New York about two or three times a year and I love it. I usually go to the Met at least one of those three times. It's funny, I always see more "Mr. Moms" at the Met than I do anywhere else!
